The Pioneer Line

New York merchant John Ogden started this line that ran from New York to San Francisco as early as 1852, and possibly even earlier. He had previously been a junior partner with E.B. Sutton, operating the Dispatch Line out of New York beginning in the late 1840s. As its name implies, the Pioneer Line was one of the earliest such clipper lines and was established at a time when freight rates were high and there was plenty of business to go around. Thus it was that printed advertisements for this firm are rare. Among the clippers that sailed in the Pioneer Line, many of them famed flyers of extreme model that were built at the beginning of the clipper ship era, were the following: Atalanta, Shooting Star, Wings of the Morning, Tinqua, Flying Fish, Wild Pigeon, Wild Duck, and Antelope. How long this line lasted is uncertain; while it may have been out of business by 1855 or thereabouts after the clipper craze had died out, John Ogden himself was still involved with clippers, purchasing the Massachusetts-built Onward in 1857 for $32,000 and operating the ship until her sale in 1861.
